We are really into using the technology in our class for our learning. We have been using these to do our writing, make presentations, spelling, inquiry and part of our maths. Once we have completed our work we share it with Miss Ward and she makes comments for us, just like marking a book! It is awesome using devices for our learning. Everyone is very motivated! Miss Ward has even set it up so that we can do part of our homework on it and finish work that we have on our drive, at home. Some of us have been showing our parents what we have been doing and they think it is pretty cool too! Miss Ward is enjoying not having to photocopy work or cart books home to mark!
Today we got our e-ako maths accounts set up using all the cool technology available to us. At the moment we have got 11 chrome books, one ipad, four apple laptops and one apple desktop computer to use. We are awaiting the arrival of around seven mini ipads, aren't we lucky?! Once we set up our accounts for e-ako we were able to use this cool maths tool. E-ako will be one of the options available to us in self-regulated learning for maths (more about self-regulated maths to come!).
Working with Matai - Friday March 21st
Today we got to work with the Matai year six children as Miss McCulloch was away at a course. Miss Ward got us to design something that we think will be used for travel in the future, as part of our inquiry unit. There were lots of very cool ideas and who knows...some of them might happen! Thanks for hanging with us for the day year sixes, we had a blast! :)
Wednesday March 26th
Today we had first aid training with Jacqui from Red Cross. Here are some things we learnt:

- it is important to check there is nothing blocking the airway when someone is unconscious. (James C).
- how to attend to someone if they are unconscious. (Reece).
- if there is an issue with someone drinking a poison ring 0800 POISON (Callum).
- it is important to look after yourself if there has been an accident - check for danger! (James B).
- you need to be 10 metres away from powerlines if they are dropped to be safe (Glynn).

Our big question for inquiry is How Has Life Changed Over Time? This is tied in with our school reunion that is being held on Otago Anniversary weekend. We did some bundling this week which is the mucking in stage of our SMARTIE inquiry process. Bundling is where we write down all the different ideas we have about the big question. We then get into groups and work together to bundle the ideas we have into categories. Here we are bundling below:
Friday February 21st
We have had a great start to homework in our team this year with everyone getting it completed and handing it in on time. Well done, keep up the top effort everyone!
For our second language this year we are learning Mandarin with Alex. Alex is from Japan and is staying in the Balclutha area for the year. She visits us every second Friday for the day and spends about 50 minutes teaching our class Mandarin. We are all looking forward to learning lots about this language.
Remember the school athletic sports are on Monday. Come prepared for four seasons in one day as we know what it can be like in South Otago weather wise!!
Swimming is now finished for the year. Good luck to all those competing at the South Otago Swimming Championships on Tuesday night. Warm up is from 4.30pm.
Congratulations to all the children on their wonderful flower show entries. There were lots of excellent creations on display!
There is technology this week on Thursday in Balclutha and savaloy orders are due back by Thursday!
Year 7 & 8 School Committees are into full swing with lots of things being completed and organised. The School Camp Fundraising Committee has been busy collecting prizes for a bumper raffle they will be holding to raise funds for their camp to Queenstown in August. Watch this space for more information! So far there has been around $1800 fundraised for camp through selling savaloys every week, BBQs and children working at the PTA House and Garden Tour last year. This is a fantastic effort and we hope to continue to add to this total.
