Garden/Enviro Club

Wednesday 26 March

When we arrived at the garden today we noticed that something has been eating the leaves of the cabbage plants. Charlotte and Elliot thought it could be a butterfly... we did see some in the garden! During weeding we found a slug which Kadys thought could be the problem.

We are going to go home and try and find out what we can do to stop this happening to our plants!

Great teamwork to get the hose untangled so we can water the plants!

Ollie still thinks Sam and his are the tallest!

I wonder what sort of cooking they will get put into!

Thursday  13 March

Finally ... After a sleepless night waiting to enjoy our yummy garlic bread it is lunch time! We thought the Multi Purpose room has never smelt so yummy!

The Garden Club waiting very patiently for their garlic bread.

We discovered that it was rather hot after being in the oven! We all tried different ways of cooling it down.

Josh blew on the entire piece garlic bread, Jake shook his hands to help cool his down, Savanna tried blowing on each piece as she had it in her hands.

"It's too hot!" Sam

"The bottom is crunchy." Jade

"I like the crusty outside and the soft inside." Megan

Tarquin, Henry and Kadys couldn't wait for it to cool down so ate very carefully, meanwhile Cam and Jade took their time with their garlic bread.

Wooooo hooooo that was yummy!

Wednesday 12 March
At lunchtime today the Garden Club were called to the Multi Purpose room.
It was very exciting to see Julie- we haven't seen her in awhile! We talked about all the garlic we harvested from the garden and what we could do with it.
Julie had been to Balclutha and brought some ingredients for the Garden Club to make garlic bread- lucky us!
We couldn't use our garlic because we didn't have a garlic crusher- but we think next time we will try look for one. How cool would that be making garlic bread with our own garlic!

Julie talked to us about garlic cloves and taught us how to take all the skin off the garlic.
Julie knows heaps about gardening!

As you can see below it was pretty tricky!

We had to focus really hard to get all of the skin off.

Once we made sure the skin was all off we were allowed to try some raw garlic...

 Here is George trying his!
He wasn't so sure if he liked it or not. George thought it was a wee bit spicy!

Julie brought buns and we mixed crushed garlic with butter to put into the buns!
We are looking forward to having them for lunch tomorrow...

Thank you Julie for all your help :) We love coming to Garden Club!

Watch this space for the end result!

Friday 7 March
In the Garden we have planted some broccoli and a new vegetable for our garden Pak Choi. We are looking forward to seeing and tasting it!

Jake digging holes for our Pak Choi to be planted in.

Sam making sure our Pak Choi plants get a good start!

Mean while Cam and Henry were planting the broccoli plants.
It turned out to be very exciting as we found some bonus new potatoes when working the soil to plant the new broccoli plants!

We then went to check out the sun flowers!
We noticed the standards worked and then talked about next time where we should plant them.
Next year it has been decided that we are going to plant them in front of the hedge so they can get the two important S's- Sun and Shelter!

"The ones Sam and I planted have grown the tallest!" Ollie

"They are nice and tall." Savanna

"I want mine to grow up to the sun." Alfie

Miss McC sent some children home with chili's we have grown in our glasshouse-  she is looking forward to hearing what they tasted like and what type of cooking they got used for at home... Next week jalapeƱos will be on the menu for some families.

Tuesday 25 February
Today we checked on our sunflowers. We noticed that a few of our sunflowers have been knocked over in the wind.

Jake, Heather and Georgia looking at the sunflowers.

Team talk time! What can we use to help them grow tall?

To solve this problem Jake helped Miss McC use some electric standards as a stake to support the sunflowers.

Thursday 20 February

We have been busy getting our garden up and running after the holidays.

Do do this we harvested lots of different vegetables. We couldn't believe how big our potatoes had grown! They also were very clean- we didn't need to clean a thing!

The lovely Julie took some potatoes home and made it into some yummy potato salad and boiled the new potatoes with mint. It was delicious!

We have planted lettuces and with this hot weather the Garden Club is working hard to make sure that they are getting watered every day!

  1. Garden Club sounds like a fabulous club to be part of - especially since you get to eat what you produce in your garden! We love getting bits and pieces to cook up at home too, although I have to be honest I didn't quite know what to do with the chilli!
